Panagia Faneromeni Monastery

Overview

Panagia Faneromeni Monastery is located in Chiliomodi village. It is a monastery for women, which dates from the 16th century. It was established in 1700. The monastery is decorated with religious paintings of the Post-Byzantine art.
During the Greek War of Independence, the monastery was used as a military camp for the Greek soldiers and as a shelter for the civilian population. Recently it was in danger because of a fire in the forest around the monastery.
The monastery honor is in 15th of August and it holds a fest in 23rd of August for three days.
According to the tradition on 23rd of August the celebration of the Virgin Mary comes to an end. This is a custom that Christians took from Jews. It is a very big festival.
Except for the Mother Superior there are also 11 nuns in the monastery.
