Hermes Cave

Overview

On the east side of mount Ziria, at an altitude of 1750 meters, famous Hermes Cave is situated. According to the myth, in that cave the god Hermes, the son of Zeus and Maia, was born. The cave was the sacred center of the region and in the ancient times people were visiting it to honor god Hermes, and to ask him for help.
The cave is 1.200 sqm and has 8 chambers with stalactite and stalagmite complexes, which shows that the cave exists for millions of years. It is tilted downwards and the main road to the cave is about 100 meters. The Speleological Greek Expeditionary Group is organizing safe excursions in Hermes Cave, within the framework of Ziria Music Festival, which happens every year.
