Agios Georgios Zacholi

Overview

One of the most important churches in the region, from an architectural and historical point of view is the Agios Georgios church in Zacholi. It is a rare, special religious monument with 17 domes and an impressive history.
According to stories, the church was built in 1811 within 39 days after heroic efforts of the locals. The due date was determined by the Turkish commander within 40 days. If the church wasn’t built until then, either it would have been ruined or it would have become a mosque.
It played an important role to the Greek War of Independence, while a war council took place there twice under the commands of Theodoros Kolokotronis. The body of the local hero, Panagiotakis Geraris, is lying in the courtyard of the church.
